About ClassNK

Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, also known as ClassNK or NK, is an international ship classification society that is actively engaged in a growing range of ship related activities and services aimed at contributing to promoting the protection of human life and property at sea as well as protection of the marine environment.  The society has been classing, auditing and surveying vessels since 1899 and is a Recognized Classification Society per 46 CFR 8.  Authorized by more than 110 flag administrations, we entered into a Memorandum of Understanding in 2011 with the United States Coast Guard to perform vessel inspection functions on U.S. flagged vessels on behalf of the Coast Guard.

As a nonprofit organization with more than 230 million gross tons on register, we are one of the world’s largest classification societies, helping to secure the safety of about 20% of the world’s ocean-going commercial vessels.  With a network of over 130 offices worldwide, we are committed to the fostering of safe maritime operations and practices.

As the U.S. towing industry grows, we are developing solutions for regulatory compliance needs.  Our experienced team are reliable resources for developing new compliance verification services to fulfill the changing regulations in the industry.  With additional support from our subsidiaries, Safety Management Systems, LLC and Helm Operations, we are prepared to provide a full range of compliance services focusing on the 46 CFR Subchapter M requirements.  ClassNK America Group is prepared to work together or as individual teams to provide a specific or groups of services based on the needs of each organization.
